I don’t get the ants that are invading my apartment.

They’re all like, no, we’re not going to go where you actually eat things and where there’s food, like the table or the kitchen! That would be ridiculous. No, no, no! i never got this argument because why can’t you like to party and have sex AND be smart and feminist and whatever the fuck else you want to be.

saying you can only be one of those things is fucking stupid, enjoying booze and sex doesn’t mean you’re not smart or that you can’t have views on important issues

agreeing with kayla pausebro emphatically, and i have a few things to say.

1. i do think ke$ha makes fun of herself/the industry sometimes, but i don’t think she’s a parody artist. if you dig past her radio hits, you’ll find songs that deal with heartbreak, loss, and being a misfit. even in her radio hits she’s telling you to be yourself! you don’t need material possessions and men to be fulfilled! live in the moment! tease that boy/girl and take them home if you feel like it (with consent)! basically, do you and don’t let anybody else own you!

more than that, if you watch/read an interview or listen to her commentary on her albums, ke$ha clearly loves and is committed to being ke$ha. her whole gig runs on one giant, and serious, “fuck you i won’t do what you tell me.” that’s not the vibe of a parody artist. a lot of what’s been termed as “OTT” in, i’m assuming, her presentation (videos, costuming, performances, etc.) are things drawn from iconic pop culture of the past—musicians, films, books. what was found genius and unique and strange and brilliant in the cases of her male counterparts is seen as fake and vapid when ke$ha remixes it for her own purposes. which is really lame.

2. we have to stop insisting on this dichotomy of good girl vs. bad girl wherein the good girl is smart and does well in school and succeeds in life and the bad girl spirals into despair after years of partying and goes nowhere. not only does this ignore the vast, gaping grey area between those two extremes, but it also continues to perpetuate that girls having fun is bad and wrong. which is total crap! (obviously your idea of “fun” may not be partying in the typical sense, but for this purpose when i refer to party i am talking about the drinking and dancing sort.) while i do think at the core of every stereotype there is some grain of truth, i also think that truth is not the only truth. it is true that if you party to the point of exclusion you may hit a rough patch. but it is also true that you can party and be the valedictorian of your class! choosing to party does not negate intelligence, and likewise, your level of intelligence does not prescribe what kind of social life you have.

3. this also brings up the super tired message that pop music is made by and for dumb people! which, after the misogyny already dealt with in this post, is exhausting. listen up, pop music is made by smart people for everybody. a lot of people partake in the process of a pop song—the roughest draft has to be crafted just like your favorite indie song does. you need an idea, then a beat (which in and of itself is a complex, time-consuming process), a chorus, verses, and finally, a voice. and not only that but each and every one of those parts has to be made to catch the world’s attention. in some cases, the artist writes or co-writes the song themselves. in some cases they purchase one written by someone else. either way, whoever wrote the song had to have the skill—yes, the considerable skill—to do so. and in the case where the artist simply buys a song, then you can’t overlook the work of actually recording it. finding a way to make it their own and recording countless takes? pop stars easily put in as much time in the booth as musical artists of every other genre.

on top of that, pop music is a business in many ways. not to undermine the heart and soul and joy of its performers, but it is a business. therefore, anybody that breaks into it obviously has an understanding of a) themselves b) their fan base c) the market. releasing a single and getting it into the top 40 seems to me a lot like predicting the stock market—a job people get paid and praised a lot to do. you have to be aware of what’s going on in society, what the people are reacting to, and what is lacking, so that you can fill that spot for them and bring people happiness. that process is intelligent and sadly undervalued.

TL;DR: ke$ha is a feminist warrior princess, you can party and be smart, and pop music is an awesome and complicated beast.
